I referenced an acrylic portrait I did a while back for this work. A few tidbits about this type of art:

I first make the stitches with my sewing machine, without ever pre-drawing the image. It's all freeform.
I then add colors mainly with watercolors and also sometimes gouache and sometimes acrylics.
I frequently place a binder clip at the top and hang it on a wall to display. I also display it with wooden clothespins on string or wire. I also use magnets to display it on a metal unit. Sometimes, I handstitch a work like this onto other things, like a pillow, tote, jacket, larger fabric, etc.
Regarding questions related to permanence that I get from people: Will the watercolor wash out? I suppose if I threw this art into the washing machine, it would activate and wash out. And I suppose watercolored paper would also wash out if washed. But why would I ever do such things? :-)
